Homemade Gluten-Free Seasoned Salt
{Lawry’s Seasoned Salt® Copycat Recipe}

We love using this Gluten-Free Seasoned Salt blend to season everything from cottage cheese to beef, chicken, fish, and pork, salads, snacks, and let us not forget vegetables! One batch makes about 8-ounces, enough to use some now and store a little for seasoning more foods later.

Created in 1938, the same year it’s inventor, Lawrence L. Frank, and his brother opened the original Lawry’s Prime Rib Restaurant in Beverly Hills; the unique seasoning blend’s initial purpose was to heighten the flavor of prime rib perfectly. Imagine how they must have felt after discovering that the seasoning mixture also elevated the taste of many other foods too.

Contrary to the reception that the seasoning blend received from guests of Lawry’s Prime Rib Restaurant®, Frank never thought there was much business potential in the seasoned salt product.

But despite his confidence in it, the popularity of Lawry’s Seasoned Salt® continued to grow. Eventually, prompting an entire line of Lawry’s® products, and the rest, as they say, is history.

From being stolen off tables to a business venture that today is a thriving, multimillion-dollar product line, the story of how it came to be is an interesting short read from the inventor’s son, Richard Frank.

A household seasoning staple

As long as I can remember, seasoned salt has been a household seasoning staple in my family. Its been one of the everyday, all-purpose seasonings found conveniently located near the stove in all the kitchens I hung out in when growing up.

It was on my list of “Must-Haves” right behind regular salt and pepper when I shopped to stock my first apartment kitchen. And, silly as it sounds, I think I had a hunch that my dear hubby and I were ‘meant to be’ after discovering the jar of seasoned salt next to the stove in his mother’s kitchen too.

And for a good reason: seasoned salt is just plain delicious.

Best kept secrets

Understandably, McCormick® is pretty hush-hush about the exact amounts used in the proprietary blend. Those sorts of things are always kept top-secret in the world of manufacturing. Still, this recipe is spot on, sans the tricalcium phosphate, a listed ingredient on the Lawry’s bottle, that is for keeping elements free-flowing.

As with all copycat recipes, there’s some debate about what all is in the original Lawry’s Seasoned Salt®. Some people insist that celery salt is in it while others do not. I think that the inclusion of celery salt and ground celery seed makes the finished seasoning taste more authentic.

Lower sodium

To keep the recipe as high up on the feel-good about it category as possible, I’ve used about one-eighth of a cup, less salt than most other copycat recipe versions I found for seasoned salt.

Speaking of sodium – one of the best things about making a copycat recipe is having the flexibility to make something that you can feel good about eating, without all the guilt. Need to cut out salt entirely? Are you looking to create a no-sugar version of seasoned salt? Both are possible when you make it yourself adjusting the recipe to your dietary needs.

There are dozens of ways to use this DIY Gluten-Free Seasoned Salt in all your favorite recipes!

  1. Hard-boiled eggs – Slice, season, and eat.
  2. Cottage Cheese – Scoop a dollop of creamy cottage cheese on a plate and sprinkle seasoned salt on top, umm good!
  3. Salads – sprinkle seasoned salt on top of the salad greens then dress with a little EVOO and lemon juice. Taste SENSATION!
  4. Pasta Salad – Leave out the plain old regular salt and use a sprinkle of this to make your pasta salads sing with flavor!
  5. Popcorn – Drizzle or spritz a little butter or olive oil on top, then sprinkle on some seasoned salt.
  6. Vegetables and Stir-fry – Adding a dash to steamed or stir-fried veggies is always a home-run!
  7. Burgers – Season ground beef with this seasoning blend before pan-frying or grilling to make them taste over the top good.
  8. Fries – A family favorite! I also add a sprinkle of Cajun Seasoning.
  9. Gluten-Free Chex Mix – A tailgate party pleaser, holiday treat, or summer cabin snack wouldn’t be the same without this treat, made with seasoned salt, of course.
  10. Meats- Including the best Prime Rib, Rotisserie Roasted Chicken, Oven-Baked Chicken or Porkchops, To-Die-For Salmon, Steaks, Grilled Shrimp, and more – these meats wouldn’t be the same without seasoned salt.
  11.  Soups – Add a dash or maybe more to Homemade Chicken Noodle or Wild Rice Soup. DIVINE!
  12. Seafood – A sprinkle of seasoned salt makes all the difference!

Making seasoned salt is so straightforward

Measure out all the ingredients, add them to a bowl, stir or whisk to combine, store the mixture in an airtight container, then start adding a shake of flavor to almost everything you make!
It really is that simple.

Variations

The blend can be made with variations to change the flavor precisely to your liking. For instance, you can use regular, sweet, or smokey flavored Spanish hot paprika. We love the slightly smokey taste that Spanish hot paprika adds, and I found that adding ground celery seed also gives the blend depth in flavor, so I’ve included it in my recipe below. But you could certainly leave it out.

There’s really no limit to what you can add this gluten-free seasoned salt to, for adding a boost of savory flavor – including my next recipe for Seafood Pasta Salad. So blend up a batch and get ready for delicious!

  • Stir to combine using a whisk or fork to blend the ingredients.
  • Store the seasoning in a tightly-sealed glass jar or airtight container.

KITCHEN NOTES

[1] Using popcorn salt helps the spices to infuse the salt in flavor while adding a smooth texture to the seasoning blend.
[2] Half granulated sugar with an equal amount of superfine sugar keeps the blend free-flowing and shaking easily without clumping when stored in an airtight container. You could also use only granulated sugar.
[3] Even though you won’t find celery salt or ground celery seed listed on the Lawry’s® bottle, many people (as I do) think that the inclusion of these spices makes the seasoning taste more authentic. If that’s you, follow the recipe as is; otherwise, you may want to skip using them.
[4] Again, cayenne pepper is not on the label, but for a little extra zest, a pinch of cayenne pepper is just the ticket.

Use gluten-free seasoned salt as heavy or as sparingly as you would any salt. Remember that the bulk of the mixture is still salt, just with a little extra zest from additional spice!
