Spicy Southwestern Grilled Wings with Avocado Jalapeno Dressing

Delicious and tasty crowd-pleasing wings at home are particularly easy to do when you’re fixing them on the grill. And, for fantastic flavor, it doesn’t get any tastier than when you top the grilled wings with cool and creamy avocado jalapeno dressing.

If you’re like me, sometimes you get a hankering for eating something a little spicy, zesty, and smokey tasting all at the same time. Pair those qualities with grilled chicken wings and cool and creamy dressing, and you’ll hear me chanting winner, winner chicken dinner!

From sports bars to tailgate parties, entertaining friends to serving movie-night snacks, there’s no arguing that wings are an all-time favorite finger-licking, lip-smacking food to be prepared and enjoyed in countless ways. One of our family’s go-to ways to fix wings especially when we know we’re going to be short on time later in the day is to prepare and marinade the wings ahead of time. A few hours in the refrigerator will deepen and enhance the flavor when you’re ready to grill. Actual grilling time only takes a short 30 minutes.

We’re huge fans of avocados and jalapenos at our house, so incorporating them into our meals whenever possible seems natural for me. And, because my dear hubby is a sauce fanatic, I’d never dream of putting wings on the table without serving a sauce or dressing to go with them. Hence, my ongoing challenge to get creative with saucy ideas. I thought I’d give this combination a try. Again, I get this dressing ready ahead of time and refrigerate it until serving. Easy, tasty and oh so good, I must admit that the outcome was even better than I’d initially expected. The creamy avocado blends well with the mayo and yogurt. The flesh of the pepper adds just a bit of zip, and the balance of spice and flavors combine perfectly with the southwestern seasoning for grilled wings. The dressing would be great on taco salads, burrito bowls, used in a wrap; wow, I’m getting excited about all of the possibilities. In our opinion, it’s five-star all the way!

Whether you’re making these wings as an appetizer, or for your dinners main course, you’ll be amazed by the super flavor these Southwestern-style wings, and this dressing brings to the table.

Spicy Southwestern Grilled Wings with Avocado Jalapeno Dressing

Whether you’re making these wings as an appetizer, or for your dinners main course, you’ll be amazed by the super flavor these Southwestern-style wings, and this dressing brings to the table.

Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 pounds Chicken Wings*, wing tips removed
  • 1/2 Cup Olive Oil
  • 1/4 Cup Red Wine Vinegar
  • 2 Tablespoons gluten-free Southwest Seasoning
  • 1 Tablespoon Green Salsa Verde
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Salt
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Pepper
    For the Dressing
  • 1 ripe Avocado, removed from skin and pitted
  • 1 Jalapeno, raw, stem and seeds removed
  • 1/2 Cup gluten-free Mayonnaise
  • 1/2 Cup Greek-Style Yogurt
  • 1/2 Cup 2% Milk**
  • 1 Tablespoon Lime Juice
  • 1 Tablespoon gluten-free Southwest Seasoning
  • 1 Teaspoon gluten-free Cajun Seasoning
  • 1/2 Teaspoon ground Cumin
  • Dash Cayenne Pepper

Instructions

    For the Wings
  1. In a large resealable zipper bag combine oil, vinegar, seasoning, salsa Verde, salt, and pepper. Close bag and toss lightly to combine the ingredients.
  2. Add chicken to marinade, seal bag and turn to coat the wings.
  3. Refrigerate at least 30 minutes and up to two hours before grilling. Remove chicken from marinade. Discard any remaining marinade.
  4. Grill over medium-high heat 20 to 30 minutes, turning every 5 minutes to brown and crisp the skin. The internal temperature of the wings should reach 165ºF when done.
    For the Dressing
  1. Add avocado, jalapeno, mayonnaise, yogurt, and milk in a small blender or blender jar. Pulse until blended and smooth.
  2. Pour mixture into a small bowl, whisk in lime juice, seasoning and spice. Refrigerate until needed.

Notes

*According to the USDA, the average uncooked whole chicken wing weighs 102 grams (or 3.5 ounces). For an average person’s appetite for actual chicken meat per serving (six-ounce serving), you’ll need approximately five to six whole chicken wings.

**For a thinner dressing add more milk, one tablespoon at a time, until desired consistency.
